Date nights are few and far between for my husband and me. We usually take the kids with us when we head to dinner and a movie. The last movie we saw was a free screening of Despicable Me 2, which was hilarious, but it’s nice when we can enjoy a movie alone. When we actually get a babysitter, we have to come up with a creative date idea. It’s funny how you almost forget to be a couple after speaking in kid lingo for 99% of your time together. However, when we start forgetting, we make it a priority to plan a night alone and spend some quality time together.
Currently we are preparing for Valentine’s Day {yes, when you are a parent, it takes much planning ahead} and are curious to spice our date night up a bit with K-Y Yours+Mine personal lubricant from Walmart. The best date nights don’t always involve going out and spending a bunch of money on dinner and a movie. Instead we plan on working together to fix dinner first, which will be nice. We are always in a rush to get dinner done on week nights because we both work full time and I don’t get home until after 5 p.m. Plated.com has some great date night dinner ideas that you can make with your significant other, like Wild Mushroom Pappardelle with Mascarpone. Even fixing something as simple as baked buffalo chicken makes a great date night dinner.
This is one of the rare nights that dinner can be eaten in front of the television. It’s important for us to eat dinner as a family every night but nice when you can munch in front of the TV. Plus you can watch a movie while you are eating. Comedies are always a hit with us. Action is good, drama is good, but a good comedy will have you both laughing and set you up for a happy ending to the night. You can’t beat a good bottle of wine either. It warms the body and lowers the inhibitions a bit. There is nothing wrong with that during a night alone. I love Diamond from Two-EEs Winery, located here in northern Indiana and owned by one of my family members. Although I have a few months before I can indulge in wine, I have a bottle waiting for me on the counter {as you can see}.
All of the above equals a perfect date night for my husband and me and the way I prefer to spend Valentine’s Day this year. We can beat the crowds at the movie theater and the restaurant, save money and spend some quality time together with our K-Y Yours+Mine, enjoy being kidless for a few hours and enjoy adult company.
Some other great date night ideas for parents include:
- Relive your very first date. My husband and I met at a bar in college and had our first date the next day. He took me out for a few games of pool, dinner and we cuddled by candlelight in front of his fireplace to end the night.
- Book a hotel room. Change up the setting. Get away from the mess of toys at home and spend a romantic night together in a room you don’t have to worry about cleaning up {I feel like I am constantly picking up toys}.
- Do something you’ve never done before. This honestly might be a struggle with my husband, but might end up being really fun or almost comedic. Have you ever had a dance lesson together, a cooking lesson or a painting class? Try something new together that you wouldn’t typically do.
- Use a sick day. If your kids are at the babysitter, daycare or school, take a sick day from work and stay in bed all day with your spouse or spend the day shopping, out on the town or in a movie theater. It will make you feel like a kid again. I remember the days we used to sleep until noon and lay in bed and watch movies all day.
So as much fun as these munchkins are to hang out with, I have to remember how much fun my husband and I have ALONE. It keeps the relationship going strong because all the stress during the work week makes us bite each others head off at times. Sometimes people forget to fulfill all of their roles, especially when you are a parent. What great date night ideas do you have for Valentine’s Day? I’d love to hear some other ideas!
